Super Mario RPG is a Nintendo Switch remake of the 1996 Super Nintendo Entertainment System game Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars released worldwide on November 17, 2023. First announced during the June 2023 Nintendo Direct, this remake reimagines the original game in full 3D graphics, mostly maintaining the original characters’ designs and proportions. The game’s soundtrack has also been rearranged with new orchestration by the original game’s composer, Yoko Shimomura.
It was developed by ArtePiazza, a studio associated with Square Enix and known for their work on remaking entries in the Dragon Quest series. It features full 3D graphics, updated character and enemy names, with Princess Toadstool being called Princess Peach to reflect her modern nomenclature and Frogfucius being renamed Frog Sage, and the option to switch between the original music and a newly arranged soundtrack by Shimomura.
New battle mechanics include the option to swap party members (except for Mario) in the middle of battle, the ability to damage all enemies when performing perfect action commands, and powerful team-specific “triple moves” performed after building a gauge using successful action commands. Other additions include an easier difficulty setting, a bestiary to view enemies the player has encountered, and post-game content, including a sound player and more difficult boss rematches. Enter—or revisit—a world of whimsy with Mario on a quest to repair Star Road and defeat the troublemaking Smithy Gang.
Team up with a party of unlikely allies, like the monstrous Bowser and a mysterious doll named Geno, in a story-rich RPG packed with laughs and quirky characters. Players new to RPGs or who want a story-focused experience can use the new Breezy difficulty, which makes battles easier and leveling up faster. You can set the difficulty at any time if you change your mind. Jump towards your next goal and continue the story. Run into monsters to enter turn-based battles with your party of three. Master the new Chain and Triple Moves system to claim victory.
